It’s no secret… I’m a get-things-done nut. I make lists, I have ‘work music’ and I work hard to organize my space and time for optimal productivity. My day is scheduled out to the half hour. My kids know the schedule and have their own schedules hanging on the wall. Even play time is scheduled around here.
Why? Because I work from home, and we homescool. Both of these things are full time jobs. Add in trying to be a mom, wife, and housekeeper? Things can get crazy real fast without a schedule.
In addition to scheduling my time like a boss, I’ve found a few things that make work time more enjoyable and productive.
My Favorite Productivity Boosters
2. Essential Oils – Yep. I’m one of those people. My husband likes to joke that no one warned him marriage meant odd smells in the house. My diffuser is one of my best friends. A little water and a couple drops of essential oils can really change my mood. Peppermint and Wild Orange are my favorite work blend. Sometimes I even put a drop of each in my hand and rub them across the back of my neck, then I cup my hands over my face and inhale. Wow! Wakeup time. (Need some oils? Email me!)
3. Bulletproof Coffee – Now, I can’t have caffeine anymore due to a rapid heart rate, but as a former barista, nothing greets the morning like the smell and taste of coffee. And it has to be good coffee. I recently learned about Bulletproof coffee, a specially grown, harvested, and processed bean which is blended with grass-fed unsalted butter and an oil blend high in omega 3 called Brain Octane. I order mine from Thrive Market for way less than it can be found on Amazon.
4. Steno Pads and Zebra Pens – I’m an old-fashion list maker. I like a small tablet of paper right next to my keyboard at all times. I like that Steno Pads flip over the top so the spiral binding is never in my way. They’re cheap and I go through them like guten-free hotcakes, so I normally order them in bulk. Not cheap, but equally important to me are these Zebra ballpoint pens. I guard them with my life.
5. An Office Door – Have I mentioned that my kids are at home with me all day? Well, they are. And that means it’s noisy (times infinity) around here all day long, except for the 45 minutes or so that the little one naps. My boys know that if my door is shut I’m either on a call, or I need to focus, so they can’t just barge in and start talking. They must enter quietly and survey the situation. If I’m not on the phone I will pause to see what they need, but they know to close the door on their way back out and not to come in every 30 seconds. Even when the door is open they know they aren’t allowed to play in mom’s office. That’s my space and it’s for work. This helps me to keep that mindset of getting things done when I’m in my office. Sure, there are days (or nights) when I work from the couch and things are more relaxed, but having that designated space really helps me.
BONUS! Change of Scenery – In my post, The Secret of the Empty Office Chair, I detail one of my favorite productivity boosters… time away from my desk. Yes, I just said I love my office and my closed door. But some days, you just need to break the cycle and have a change of scenery, especially when you work from home. Hitting up the coffee shop once or twice a week makes a big difference for me. Doing so requires me to hire a mother’s helper for the kids, so I’m under even more pressure to make the time away productive!
