Located in Sioux, Falls, SD, the Sertoma Butterfly House and Marine Cove was one of my family’s favorite stops on our trip home from Minnesota. It’s easy to get to from I-29 or I-229 and offers hands on exhibits like petting stingrays and sharks!
Our first stop was the marine cove. It’s a large room next to the gift shop and it’s surrounded by beautifully kept aquariums with fish and other marine life from all over the world. On one end of the room is a large low tank where you can touch stingrays and sharks. An animal caretaker is there to answer all your questions and tell you about each animal. We spent almost an hour in that room, just enjoying the aquariums and touching creatures we normally wouldn’t get to interact with.
Then we went through the airlocks out into the atrium where the butterflies live. It’s kept warm year round and when without hundreds of butterflies would be a beautiful area to walk around. There are no North American species in the butterfly house… all the butterflies are from tropical regions, so you get to see some really interesting insects and get very close to them. Some may even land on you! I took LOTS of pictures of the beautiful butterflies and enjoyed watching some hatch and dry themselves. The caretakers are volunteers, but they’re very friendly and knowledgeable. The lady on staff during our visit answered all our questions and helped us find the butterflies that were about to hatch so we could see them in the different stages. It was educational, but also very enjoyable for our whole family.
If you’re ever passing through Sioux, Falls, SD I highly recommend you stop at the Sertoma Butterfly House! Admission for adults is $8.50 and kids range from free (0-3yr) to $5.50.
